Summary Status: Prepare for Closeout
Type of Research: Outreach
Project Dates: 09/01/2015 to 11/01/2017
Abstract/Project Summary: The New Mexico Geographic Alliance was formed in 1992 by Governor Bruce King in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and the University of New Mexico. Dr. Peggy Blackwell has served as the Coordinator of the Alliance since 1992. Dr. Phillip Bacon was Co-coordinator of the Alliance from 1993 - 1996. Dr. O. Paul Mathews, PhD., J.D, then Chair Geography Department, UNM, Albuquerque, joined Dr. Blackwell as Co-coordinator in 2003. In 2004 the alliance saw a physical move of the alliance office from the College of Education to the College of Arts and Sciences, where is it housed by the Geography Department in Bandelier Hall East. Early the next year K-12 classroom teachers Ann Zutavern (Rio Rancho Public Schools) and Ronald V. Murray (Albuquerque Public Schools) took the reins as co-coordinators. Dr. Matthews remained on board as geographer-in-residence, working with a diverse team of professional geographers and professors to maintain corporate continuity and experienced technical expertise. In 2010, the Alliance was taken over by Rebecca M. Sanchez as the Alliance Coordinator and Quincy Spurlin as the Co-Coordinator, both with the Department of Teacher Education at the University of New Mexico. In September 2011 the Alliance was moved to New Mexico State University where Dr. Michael DeMers, Professor of Geography was made interim Alliance Coordinator. The overall goals of the Alliance remain: •To improve and increase the knowledge of geography; •To use geography and social studies standards as the base for teaching geography; •To enhance teachers' ability to teach geography in ways that excite and interest students in geographic knowledge; •To coordinate instructional activities during Geography Awareness Week each fall; •To develop curriculum materials related to the geography of New Mexico, the nation, and the world; •To implement Family Geography activities so that families may enjoy learning about geography together; •To increase public awareness of the importance of geography education. Additionally the newly formed Alliance will add the following to its goals: •To increase the use of online delivery methods to enhance geography education throughout New Mexico •To introduce new geographic tools like Geographic Information Sytems (GIS) and Remote Sensing as a means of inspiring both educators and students. •To introduce and coordinate instructional activities during National GIS day.
